Stopping short of decrying the induction of defecting AIADMK legislators on their resignation of their posts into the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as horse trading, the VCK and CPI(M) allies of the government on Tuesday warned that such a move would not augur well for healthy politics besides undermining the credibility of the new dispensation under Chief Minister Vijay.
Both the CPI(M), which extends outside support, and the VCK, a constituent of the government, are dismayed by the alacrity with which AIADMK rebel MLAs are resigning and joining the TVK. So far, four rebel legislators from the AIADMK have quit their posts and joined the TVK, giving fodder to the Opposition’s chorus about horse trading. Also, it will reduce the government’s dependence on the existing allies: Congress, VCK, IUML, which are in the government and the two Left parties, which are supporting from outside.

“AIADMK legislators resigning and being admitted into the TVK with no loss of time cannot be without any expectation in return. This does not augur well for healthy politics. The speed with which this happens would only be considered as the TVK encouraging it. This is unacceptable,” the CPI(M) state committee said in a statement, making known its displeasure.
Urging the TVK to desist from encouraging defection in its ranks, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, MP, asserted that his party would not give any room that would result in the downfall of the government. “We will never ever under any circumstance allow any space that would potentially lead to the downfall of the government. The government will complete its full term and we will function to ensure that,” he told the media in Coimbatore.
“While the Congress has snapped its ties with the DMK, the other two constituents of the government – VCK and IUML, remain ambivalent though their entry into the government has been taken by the DMK as breaking ranks. The two Left parties too remain ambivalent. In such a situation, the TVK would naturally explore avenues for the government’s stability,” say analysts.
